Random Thoughts: December RAK Wrap-Up

Well, what can I say but I am sorry. This month has been busy all round. I know it was probably so for you too.

I did not manage to get any RAKs out. Neither did I receive any. I was probably on Santa's Naught List and deserve it too.

I will SERIOUSLY do my best for next year. A new beginning in every sense of the word!

That's all I'll say for this post since there really isn't much to say or show you.

Goodbye 2012!!

Random Thoughts: December RAK SIgn-Up

It's the last month of the year, where ever did it go? In celebration, I am participating in RAK again after a short break.

And as December is the season of giving, please remember to give as well as take!

Here's my Wishlist first!

COMPLETE RULES RE-CAP:
Please read carefully & follow all rules!  Thank you!

  • Please sign-up each month that you can participate (and by participate, we mean give as well as receive).
  • Show off your participation by grabbing our RAK button (code is in the right sidebar).
  • Create a wish list (on Amazon, Goodreads, or your blog, etc) and post it in the Google Doc located in each R.A.K post for the month.
  • If you choose to do a R.A.K for someone, check out their wish list and contact that blogger directly for their information.
  • Once you receive a RAK, send an email to [rakbybooksoulmates @ gmail . com] so that they can update the Google Doc. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SEND EMAILS TO THIS ADDRESS!
  • E-book participation is limited to files being gifted directly to a person from the e-book store. Amazon's Kindle Store is set up to allow this, as well as the Kobo store and we believe Barnes & Noble with Nook as well.
  • At the end of the month, SHOW US YOUR R.A.K by making a "RAK Wrap-Up" post.  This post should include who you SENT gifts to as well who you RECEIVED gifts from :)
OPEN TO EVERYONE including all our International brethren!
Remember, there's always the Book Depository and they offer FREE shipping!

Easy peezy!!

Links you will need:
  • Sign up for December [HERE]
  • See who else is participating [HERE]
  • If you have any questions regarding RAK, please contact them via the following: rakbybooksoulmates @ gmail . com
Tips:
1. When talking about RAK on Twitter, please use the hastag (#RAK). It makes it much easier to keep track of the conversations, answer questions and/or tweet back! =)
2. When submitting your wish list, please make sure that it is set to PUBLIC viewing. Some people have run into trouble with wish lists that were set to private. We want to be sure that no one is left out of getting great RAKs.
3. Some of you seem to have gotten frustrated because you can't get your links to appear active. This is a very easy fix :) Just make sure that when you enter your link, do NOT hit the Enter key. Instead, hit the TAB key which will send you to the next field on the form. Additional spaces entered after the link will leave the link inactive. However, if this does happen to you...no worries, we'll fix it for you :)

Giveaway Goodies: Milk Nursingwear Giveaway

* Giveaway is now CLOSED. Thank you all for your participation!

Milk is a one-stop-online shop that offers chic, stylish, and most of all, comfortable nursing wear for both moms-to be as well as nursing moms! Milk is the brainchild of Elisa Minsk Hartstein, a mom four times over who wanted to share her years of knowledge and produce nursing wear moms won't shy away from wearing.

Keyhole top
One of their most popular products is their nursing tops. The one above caught my attention! This keyhole top reminds me of a dress I saw Christina Hendrick's character Joan wearing in Season 1 of Mad Men. That makes this top a fashion statement, on top of being a comfy choice for nursing moms. The hidden opening makes it so easy for moms to nurse without hassle.

Bamboo white belly band
They even have an eco-friendly range aptly named ecoMilk incorporating the softest organic cottons or bamboo fibers making products naturally breathable, anti-bacterial, and biodegradable.

Maya Wrap

Milk even has something for gift showers such as their cute slings, onesies, and baby bibs! Milk also sells nursing bras, dresses, and really cute sleepwear. You're spoilt for choice with Milk! Best of all, some of their great products are on SALE right now for less than $40!

The thing I love about Milk is their commitment to quality products. Milk also ships worldwide so everyone can have some Milk! I also love their milk $ rewards which can be redeemed for dollars-off purchases. So the more you purchase the more credits you have.

Milk is sold in stores anywhere from Australia all the way to the Bahamas. For more locations, check out their Store Locator.Or, better still, just shop shop at their online store and earn your milk $ rewards from the comfort of your own home.

To read some of Milk's testimonials, click here.
Check out their blog for tips and product updates.

Foodie Hunt: Ghirardelli Sweet Ground Chocolate and Cocoa

My Story

I first learnt about Ghirardelli from a chocolate program that was playing on cable TV. The Chocoholic in me fell instantly in love with what I saw. From the ice cream sundaes to the shelves of chocolate bars! How I wish I lived in America.
Nevertheless I jotted down the name "Ghirardelli" and found that they produce Hot Chocolate! One of my fave chocolate treats! A nationwide search went underway with me searching everywhere for the wonderful golden tin. But none were to be found. After a few years, I had given up hope of ever finding it in Malaysia. And so I looked to other countries for a taste of chocolate heaven.

Singapore was a dead-end, I was in complete shock. But then, on the last fateful day of my holiday in Hong Kong last year, I happened upon City Super, a lovely supermarket that stocks foods from all over the world! And guess what I found there. GHIRARDELLI!!!! And you know what I did? I swiped all the stock they had on the shelves. Yes, I did!

But What Did I Think of It? Was All the Fuss Worth It?

It sure was! Having exhausted all hot chocolate products available in supermarkets nationwide, Ghirardelli's Hot Chocolate is by far SUPERIOR! Made into a simple yet delectable drink by just adding hot water, it's deep chocolatey hue sends my heart racing in anticipation.Couple that with the extremely pleasant aroma only chocolate gives off and it becomes a little cup of heaven on Earth. Imagine stirring in some reduced milk or even some Bailey's Irish Cream!

All that and I haven't even started on the taste yet. As the rich nectar swirls around in your mouth, you suddenly understand why chocolate was the food of kings in the olden days. Just a sip renders any headaches non-existent with pleasure taking its place.

There are even recipes on the other side of the tin, one being a recipe for what else, but hot chocolate! I'd say you can't go wrong with Ghirardelli, and if you're blessed enough to live in a country which stocks the stuff, take advantage and try out all their other great flavours! I will be seething in jealousy all the way over here.

This liquid nectar can be found at City Super, Hong Kong and is priced at HK$55 for 454g.

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this review financially or otherwise. This was bought for my own use. Everything mentioned are my own thoughts based on my experience.

Giveaway Goodies & Must Go's: Palmer's and Eubos Promotion at 1 Utama!

Came back from 1 Utama just before closing time and right after dinner I was doing some window shopping, and shopping shopping, since it's the Mega Sale now. Spotted an Eubos and Palmer's Roadshow stall by Caring Pharmacy right in from of the Kiehl's outlet. Obviously, I decided to close in on it since 1) I love Eubos!! And 2) I saw a see-through box with bottles inside (usually means some sort of recycling activity - which I love and hope more brands would encourage!)

So off I went and as I approached the stall, a promoter came to me and handed me an Eubos sample. Yay for samples! It came with a form which he then told me was for the recycling program. See they have this recycling program which ends like....today (June 26) where you drop ANY empty bottle/tube of skin care/body care product into the afore mentioned see-through box and you get a RM 5 voucher to be used on the spot! AND they were having some great promotions! And there are tester bottles for all the products so you can test before you buy! LOVE!! The products are already reflecting promotional prices and you get even more GWP along with it! Buy RM 60, RM 120, RM 300 and get some great goodies!

I stocked up on some Eubos products, which I love and will review of course!

So don't wait for anything, get to 1 Utama fellow PJ/KLites and grab some great bargains! Don't say I didn't tell you so!

To recap:

The event: Eubos/Palmer's Roadshow
The place: In front of Kiehl's outlet
The time: June 26 = last day!!
The deal: Samples, testers, and promotions galore!

Random Thoughts: My May RAK

So, May was the first time I discovered RAK aka Random Acts of Kindness. My post for May is here.

I did not receive any RAKs this time. Not that I expected people to just shower me with bookie goodness. Although, I'd never say no if someone wanted to send me something. Maybe I'll get lucky in June then.

I did however send some book love as promised in my Book Depository SALE post. The Book Depository is still on sale until June 5th so if you want to spread the love and kindness, what better time to take advantage of it! On my part, I sent off 3 books. They are:

to Yelania @ The Itzel Library
She is from sunny Mexico!

to Larissa @ Larissa's Life
She is from beautiful Brazil!

to Bella @ Cheezy Feet Books
She is from the land of the royal wedding and home of The Book Depository,
United Kingdom!

Thanks to the gals at Book Soulmates for the wonderful new concept where we spread the book love!

Do sign up for June's RAK once it's out and take a dip into the RAK pool of book love!

Must Go's: Book Depository Sale!

* Offer has been extended until June 5th, Sunday!
Grab this great opportunity while you can!!

I can't stop raving about the Book Depository. It's my favourite online book retailer due to their extensive variety of books AND their free international shipping! I don't come across things like this very often so this is great! It is my go-to place for books as they are cheaper than those sold in bookstores here. Also, there are some books that I can't get in local bookstores but are available on Book Depository.

I've had nothing but success with Book Depository. And this month, they are offering 10% extra on any purchase ON TOP of their normal discounts! OMG! I am SO buying some books. Darn, there goes my book buying ban. But this doesn't happen everyday so why not just get them now!

Now, this reminded me of my post about the May RAK and what a perfect time to spread the book love to friends and other bloggers taking part in this RAK! Especially international ones that may not get as much love. Shipping is FREE and there is an extra discount now. Couldn't be more perfect!

I'll be sending some love too. You can make someone's day/week/month with your kindness!

Remember, this Sale is only until May 31 2011 so take advantage of it now!

Giveaway Goodies: Steel Petal Press Custom Letterpress Job

Custom Letterpress Wedding Invitation Set

If there is one thing I love, it's paper. I don't know why but I am addicted to it. Or buying it anyway. So if you come across a crazy lady pawing at all the paper goodies in a stationery shop, you'll know it's me! I can't help but get all lovey dovey at the sight of good quality stationery. The feel of the paper between my fingers, the bright, beautiful ink colours that turn into magical works of miniature art.

Together Forever
The other thing I love? Personalized products! And especially personalized stationery! I get goosebumps when I come across the use of personalized stationery in a novel I'm reading and instantly feel jealous.
No, this is not an April Fool joke. Although it should be.

Custom hand bound Guest Book or Photo Album

So we have agreed that I am mental about personalized stationery no? Well here is where Steel Petal Press comes in. The lovely lady behind this wonderful shop is none other than Shayna. She sells mostly letterpress cards (well duh, what else have I been talking about?) and pretty journals as well as custom invitations that you can customize to your hearts desire!

The Bookworm: Further Under The Duvet - Marian Keyes

This is my second Marian Keyes novel, the first having been Angels. But, this is my first Marian Keyes collection of journalism (any Keyes afficionado will know what this means). I never did get to read the first installment aptly entitled Under The Duvet. Notice this one has a Further before the Under? This is Part 2 people! And it is quite a standalone so no worries that you'll be lost. I wasn't! I see

I must say, I find it very refreshing to read short stories. It's a quiet reprieve after all those single-story novels, if you know what I mean. During those busy busy seasons, I feel like it's quite an accomplishment when I finish 1 story. And that is exactly why short stories are perfect! I can say, "I finished so many stories in one week!" Cheating I know, but who cares! It's MY accomplishment.

A rather funny thing happened while I was reading this book. I came across a section called Short Stories. And I thought this whole book was made up of short stories! Imagine my surprise! And that isn't even the shocker! I soon found out that these so-called Short Stories, were actually pretty long stories! And I wanted more short-er stories! It seems people are never satisfied, with people in this context meaning me of course!

One bad thing about this book, there is NO summary! Due to it being a collection of short stories (there! I said it! now you know what a collection of journalism means!!) BUT do not fear, for I will provide you with my very own summation of this story of short stories.

She starts of with a chapter called Handbags and Gladrags, talking about her experiences with what else, shopping! And a stint as a makeup writer for a magazine (VERY funny this one). Then we go On The Road, Keyes style. It's travels all the way baby! Let me tell you, she travels A LOT and this makes for lots of enjoyable reads. Health and Beauty is next, a treasure trove of tips for an ex-magazine writer. Woman to Woman is about the all-important woman power, getting married, and the F-word (gasp!) . Friends and Family introduces the Keyes family, the whole hilarious lot of them really, from cute nieces and nephews to gorgeous sisters-in-law. But Seriously. No no that is really a chapter title! This one is really touching, discussing how some of her travels have impacted on her life. And how she came to be an author. I didn't think people could come from that! And last but surely not least, Short Stories tackles well, just that. There are 8 of them and they ain't that short!

If it isn't already clear, this collection of journalism covers Keyes' many loves. Shopping (lots), traveling (quite a lot as well), family, the spa, make-up tips and tricks and loads more. Psst...she claims she stayed in a room once occupied by Tom Cruise! That's it for my mini-summary.

As for her writing style, I dig it! I like how freestyle it is and the stories flow smoothly from page to page. Although, she does use the F-word. And a variation of it, several times. But it is used so good-naturedly that it doesn't feel as obscene as it should be. Or maybe she desensitized me?

And so, you have got to trust me when I say, I really like this book! Me thinks it is time I read more short stories. If only to make myself feel better, about myself.

The Bookworm: How To Marry A Marquis - Julia Quinn

    Review by Amazon.com
    Setting: Regency England
    Sensuality: 8
Elizabeth Hotchkiss needs to marry a wealthy man, and fast. The oldest child of four well-bred orphans, she's managed to keep the wolf from their door for years, but she's running out of options. The only marriage prospect in sight is her landlord, Squire Nevins, but his lecherous gaze makes Elizabeth's skin crawl. So when she discovers the book How to Marry A Marquis in her employer's library, she impulsively stuffs it into her reticule and takes it home. Encouraged by her insistent sister, Elizabeth reluctantly agrees to learn the book's rules well enough to catch a monied husband. But first, she must find a man to practice her wiles on. Enter James Sidwell, the Marquis of Riverdale. Posing as the new estate manager per his beloved Aunt Danbury's instructions, he just happens to arrive at the Danbury estate on the very day that Elizabeth discovers the book. Is it too coincidental that James's Aunt Danbury needs his assistance in catching a blackmailer at the precise moment that Elizabeth needs a guinea pig? Perhaps, but neither Elizabeth nor James have reason to suspect that they're being lovingly maneuvered.

James begins to search for a blackmailer, and Elizabeth is high on his list of suspects. While purposely spending time with her to explore her guilt or innocence, however, he's irresistibly drawn to her beauty and kindness as well as her practicality and sharp tongue. And when he learns that she's practicing to entice a husband, he can't resist offering to tutor her in courtship. Before long, the two realize their growing feelings for each other. But the course of true love never did run smoothly, and the lovers encounter a few obstacles along the way. Will the evil Squire Nevins easily give up his designs on Elizabeth and her sisters? What about the nefarious blackmailer? And how will Elizabeth react if she discovers that James is not who he pretends to be?

    My Review
This is my very first venture into Julia Quinn after hunting for a romance novel to quench my thirst. I'd just exhausted my last novel by my fave author and was looking for something new to read. And then I stumbled upon this novel with its cute and catchy title (it worked by the way, I bought it!) I must say I am not disappointed with this book. The reason why I picked this book rather than one of her more famous books is because this one is a standalone whereas most of the others belong to a list of sequels.

I must say I disagree with Amazon.com's sensuality rating. This one is definitely tamer than my normal novels but it is a tender story about two unsuspecting lovers. Unsuspecting being the key word here but I'm not spilling! To me, a great romance book is one that offers twists and turns at every angle. A good book however where you get the feeling like you know how it ends but it's the getting there that counts. How To Marry A Marquis for me, is a good book. I knew the answer to the mystery as soon as it had started. Such a shame, although it is pretty straightforward when you get to reading it.

What I like about this book is its characters. The heroine, Elizabeth Hotchkiss is akin to a historical Bella Swan ala Twilight. A real klutz, a simpleton, an underestimated individual. And yet somehow manages to get the hot hero. James Sidwell is someone who in normal situations wouldn't get caught up by the simple life. But there is that something special about Elizabeth that sucks him in and won't let go. The side characters add sizzle to this story. Lady Danbury, James' aunt is the real sparkler for me. If anyone made a movie of this book, she'd win the Oscar. Another lovely inclusion to the list is the man of the house, Lady Danbury's cat, who ignores Elizabeth to no avail yet is her best friend in the most important of times. I wouldn't mind a cat like that. The latter bit anyway.

Overall, this is a good read and a good choice for beginners to romance and historicals. There isn't a lot of mention of the normal customs associated with period pieces so this is as good a starter as can be.

The great thing about these rings is that they are all adjustable to your size so you don't have to worry if you can't find it in your size.
