Foodie Hunt: Birthday FREEBIES! And Cupcake Chic Cupcakes!

My birthday was in January and I had the opportunity to get some foodie freebies on my special day with my Worthy Book coupons!

Amongst them, I got a FREE cupcake of my choice from Cupcake Chic at The Curve! I do like a good cupcake once in awhile. Who doesn't right? It's a mini cake so you don't feel so guilty eating it.

But the good part is that even if it's not your birthday, Worthy Book has a Buy 1, Free 1 coupon for cupcakes or macarons! So if you don't want others to feel left out on your lucky day, use both coupons and get 3 yummy cupcakes for the price of 1! What a steal.

Anyway, we didn't want 3 cupcakes as we'd already planned a heavy dinner so we settled for 2. Here are my birthday cupcakes! Aren't they pretty?

There were lots of other things I could have redeemed. Like FREE sushi! Have you ever heard of that!? And FREE ice cream and loads more. But the thing was, those outlets were pretty far away from my planned birthday dinner so I didn't get to use them. Sob.

Anyway, I am thankful for my Worthy Book coupons which has allowed me a wonderful cupcake on my birthday as well as many more yummy treats at other restaurants! Like Carl's Jr! Yum yum....

The great thing about Worthy Book is that they allow you to view all the coupons in the book from their website before buying so you'll know whether the coupons suit you. And you get lots of cool coupons for just RM 29.90. Check out their social media outlets for more updates too as they often have giveaways.

Foodie Hunt: Ghirardelli Sweet Ground Chocolate and Cocoa

My Story

I first learnt about Ghirardelli from a chocolate program that was playing on cable TV. The Chocoholic in me fell instantly in love with what I saw. From the ice cream sundaes to the shelves of chocolate bars! How I wish I lived in America.
Nevertheless I jotted down the name "Ghirardelli" and found that they produce Hot Chocolate! One of my fave chocolate treats! A nationwide search went underway with me searching everywhere for the wonderful golden tin. But none were to be found. After a few years, I had given up hope of ever finding it in Malaysia. And so I looked to other countries for a taste of chocolate heaven.

Singapore was a dead-end, I was in complete shock. But then, on the last fateful day of my holiday in Hong Kong last year, I happened upon City Super, a lovely supermarket that stocks foods from all over the world! And guess what I found there. GHIRARDELLI!!!! And you know what I did? I swiped all the stock they had on the shelves. Yes, I did!

But What Did I Think of It? Was All the Fuss Worth It?

It sure was! Having exhausted all hot chocolate products available in supermarkets nationwide, Ghirardelli's Hot Chocolate is by far SUPERIOR! Made into a simple yet delectable drink by just adding hot water, it's deep chocolatey hue sends my heart racing in anticipation.Couple that with the extremely pleasant aroma only chocolate gives off and it becomes a little cup of heaven on Earth. Imagine stirring in some reduced milk or even some Bailey's Irish Cream!

All that and I haven't even started on the taste yet. As the rich nectar swirls around in your mouth, you suddenly understand why chocolate was the food of kings in the olden days. Just a sip renders any headaches non-existent with pleasure taking its place.

There are even recipes on the other side of the tin, one being a recipe for what else, but hot chocolate! I'd say you can't go wrong with Ghirardelli, and if you're blessed enough to live in a country which stocks the stuff, take advantage and try out all their other great flavours! I will be seething in jealousy all the way over here.

This liquid nectar can be found at City Super, Hong Kong and is priced at HK$55 for 454g.

Foodie Hunt: Tutti Frutti's A Real Treat!

How could anyone deny themselves a little treat once in awhile. That’s exactly what my bestie and I DIDN’T do when we sauntered over to a Tutti Frutti outlet for some yummy frozen yoghurt. Mind you, frozen yoghurt is said to be healthier and more nutritious compared to cream-based icey treats.

We came here for dessert before heading off for a much deserved massage. So, here’s what we tried!

Strawberry Banana AND Passionfruit

This one is lovely. The strawberry banana has a great flavour. Not too sweet at all! You get a hint of eat fruit without either being too overpowering. As for the passionfruit, we were wary of it being too sour which is what you usually get fruit the actual fruit itself. But no, this wasn’t so at all! It was very pleasant. A tad tangy, but another keeper in my books! Unfortunately both flavours are pretty similar in colour so you can’t see much of a difference from the picture. I believe the one at the bottom is the passionfruit.
Strawberry Banana AND Chocolate

I’ll only comment on the chocolate. This one was, chocolatey in a word. It’s a very common chocolate flavour so I’d skip it in favour of the other better fruity flavours.

 Strawberry Banana AND Kiwi

Ah the kiwi, another fruit I thought was going to be sour. I am afraid, read AFRAID of green kiwis in general. Although the golden ones are really sweet and are slowly dispelling my fears of the fruit. This one, just like the passionfruit, is just nice. It’s sweeter than the normal fruit, thank goodness! But at the same time a little tangy due to the yoghurt.

All in all I prefer the fruity flavours. I have yet to try all the flavours as different outlets have different flavours, and usually less than 10 offerings. The brand is expanding their outlet reach as I type this so who knows what new flavour I’ll get to try next!

Tutti Frutti offers flavoured frozen yoghurts and several topping choices. Just pile on whatever you want and get it weighed. Finally a delicious treat that’s healthy and low in fat and sugar!

Tutti Frutti costs RM 5.30 per 100g. Outlets are found in most major malls. Or will be soon!

Foodie Hunt: Kura, Be Still My Heart

Food, needless to say, is one of my passions. The consumption of it. Not the preparation. Thus, I felt that for my first foodie review, it should be of one of my favourite restaurants of the moment, Kura. Now, I am a real sucker when it comes to Japanese food. And Kura has hit the mark every single time! I have been here more than 5 times now and it just keeps getting better. As I needed to get tickets for the upcoming (I can’t wait!) Beyonce concert, we simply drifted off to Kura for dinner.

Kura is located on the first floor of the One World Hotel. Bet you didn’t know they served good food in the hotel with it being next to 1 Utama. There is a door that connects the two buildings so you can shop till you drop before winding down with a scrumptious dinner.

Now, the place looks like a maze from the moment you step into the outlet. There is a section, which can be viewed from the outside that looks like a Japanese garden.

Another section houses the sushi table, where the chefs are busily preparing your sushi and sashimi orders, there are a few cubicles for a more intimate dining experience, a smoking section, a non-smoking section, and a few other areas I myself have not been into. Walk around and take your pick I say!

Onto the menu, it is HUGE to say the least. I get greedy when I see menus like these. With nice colourful pictures, and even cooler food choices! They even have fugu (puffer fish) and matsutake mushrooms! However, we were presented with a smaller extra menu last night, called their Shokuyoku no Aki menu. Translation, Autumn menu. Even more good stuff to choose from!

In the end, we ordered the Autumn Roll from the well, Autumn menu, as well as 2 Set Dinners (I love these!). They were the Sushi to Yakiniku Zen and the Unagi Kabayaki Zen. Kura has Set Dinners ranging from RM 32 to RM 85.

One thing I really love about this place, they have fresh wasabi! Okay, I personally dislike the stuff but my dining companion, can eat it on its own! you do have to request for it though. otherwise, you get the normal stuff. apparently it's a totally different experience! Try it for yourselves and let me know.

First came the salad, nice fresh, crisp greens with cherry tomatoes and onions topped with dressing.

Then, the Autumn Roll! This was REALLY good! Too bad greedy me forgot to take a side view picture. Inside the roll are salmon, crabmeat, mushrooms, and omelet topped with slices of wonderful avocado and ikura (salmon roe). Delish I must say! The seaweed, although soft (not the crispy type), was so easy to bite through it just melted.

Next, the Sushi to Yakiniku Zen arrived. Consisting of the salad (from earlier), chawanmushi, miso soup, bowl of mushrooms, 7 pieces of delectable sushi, fruits, and of course, the beef itself. This dish doesn’t come with rice as you get that from the sushi. Beef was nicely done, this was a first. A word of caution to those non-wasabi eaters like myself, they do add a little of the green stuff between the sushi. So do bring this up when ordering and have it removed.

This is my love. The Unagi Kabayaki Zen. I rarely eat unagi (grilled eel) in Malaysia. I find it is always not up to my standards but this place, I have it all the time! My set consisted of a bowl of rice, pickles, miso soup, fruits, bowl of mushrooms, chawanmushi, and my favourite, the eels themselves (how many times have I mentioned my love for this?). Perfectly marinated, not too sweet, tender, and yummy. Although, being eel, they do have some small bones in them. So do take care when eating this.

Alas, that was the end of our meal. No space for dessert yet again. Although some do look very promising! Next time perhaps. The uni (sea urchin roe) is good too. So too are their sashimi!

Kura is a pork free restaurant. They sell alcohol though. They serve lunch and dinner, although I have never been there for lunch. I wonder why.

Tip: Park in 1 Utama if you can. The parking fee at the hotel is pretty high. But beware, the door that links the two buildings closes at 11pm!

Have you ever been to Kura? Do share your thoughts on the place. If not, recommend me some other Japanese places to visit!
