December was a busy busy month, for everyone I am sure. And with that, I waited till the end of December to send of a RAK. As an extra bonus, I picked someone who's birthday fell in the same month.

And so, the book I sent off was:

This month is extra special for me as it is my BIRTH MONTH! Yeap, I am turning a year older but I hope a year wiser too! And my book obsession is as strong as ever.

Tips:

2. When submitting your wish list, please make sure that it is set to PUBLIC viewing. Some people have run into trouble with wish lists that were set to private. We want to be sure that no one is left out of getting great RAKs.

3. Some of you seem to have gotten frustrated because you can't get your links to appear active. This is a very easy fix :) Just make sure that when you enter your link, do NOT hit the Enter key. Instead, hit the TAB key which will send you to the next field on the form. Additional spaces entered after the link will leave the link inactive. However, if this does happen to you...no worries, we'll fix it for you :)

Random Thoughts: New Year, New Resolutions of 2012

Since it is officially 2012, I thought I'd go through last year's resolutions and add on some more new and more realistic ones!

1) To AGAIN be more loyal to my blog and post more frequently and regularly, and to get it redesigned and nice and tidy (which I am currently in the midst of)

Still awaiting my new blog design addition, keeping my *fingers crossed* it will be soon and really pretty! I think I did better on my posts last year but I still have so much to blog about.

2) To finish up the rest of my college degree, to the best of my abilities

Yes! I have officially graduated, a few months ago actually.

3) To lose 5kg

Err...EPIC FAIL. I think I put on more weight instead.

4) To take up photography seriously

Not achieved. Lots more to be done.

5) To make new blog buddies

Achieved in a way but lots more to go.

6) To save more money for my future travels and spending wisely on books!

Bought LOADS of books last year and now, to read them!

7) To attend more events and workshops

Am dropping this one for awhile, I just don't have the time

8) To travel more and read more

Done and done! Now to blog about them.

9) To get a part-time job AND learn to drive!

I got a part-time job woo hoo! Not the same goes for the driving though sadly.

10) To be a better person (calmer and more patient)

People still test my patience but I will continue trying to progress.

11) To clear the clutter that’s in my house

Still working on it!

On to 2012!

Reading Goals

1. To Read More YA & Dystopian Books

I have yet to read a dystopian book, crazy much (!?) but I have some with me so it's time to read them!

2. To Read The Odyssey, Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes (have had it for years) & Shakespeare (all of which I already possess)

Been putting these off due to crazy book buying habit and they're just SO LONG!

3. To Read Books before Watching the Movie Versions
People always say the books are usually better, now I want to make it a point to read the books instead of just jumping to watching to movie due to laziness.

4. Blog About Books Read
I like to read and sometimes it comes in a marathon, yet I can never find the time to blog about them, this is the year to change that habit!

Blogging Goals

1. Blog more!

Enough said. What else is a blog for?

2. Learn to Comment More

It seems as though I don't read other people's blogs but instead, I really do! But I must learn to show my appreciation for their hard work and spend a few minutes letting them know!

3. Get My Blog Button & Bar And Reorganize My Whole Blog

Been wanting to move things around and make things easier and more organized and so I will!

I received my first handmade RAK so I was very excited!

Foodie Hunt: Ghirardelli Sweet Ground Chocolate and Cocoa

My Story

I first learnt about Ghirardelli from a chocolate program that was playing on cable TV. The Chocoholic in me fell instantly in love with what I saw. From the ice cream sundaes to the shelves of chocolate bars! How I wish I lived in America.

Nevertheless I jotted down the name "Ghirardelli" and found that they produce Hot Chocolate! One of my fave chocolate treats! A nationwide search went underway with me searching everywhere for the wonderful golden tin. But none were to be found. After a few years, I had given up hope of ever finding it in Malaysia. And so I looked to other countries for a taste of chocolate heaven.

Singapore was a dead-end, I was in complete shock. But then, on the last fateful day of my holiday in Hong Kong last year, I happened upon City Super, a lovely supermarket that stocks foods from all over the world! And guess what I found there. GHIRARDELLI!!!! And you know what I did? I swiped all the stock they had on the shelves. Yes, I did!

But What Did I Think of It? Was All the Fuss Worth It?

It sure was! Having exhausted all hot chocolate products available in supermarkets nationwide, Ghirardelli's Hot Chocolate is by far SUPERIOR! Made into a simple yet delectable drink by just adding hot water, it's deep chocolatey hue sends my heart racing in anticipation.Couple that with the extremely pleasant aroma only chocolate gives off and it becomes a little cup of heaven on Earth. Imagine stirring in some reduced milk or even some Bailey's Irish Cream!

All that and I haven't even started on the taste yet. As the rich nectar swirls around in your mouth, you suddenly understand why chocolate was the food of kings in the olden days. Just a sip renders any headaches non-existent with pleasure taking its place.

There are even recipes on the other side of the tin, one being a recipe for what else, but hot chocolate! I'd say you can't go wrong with Ghirardelli, and if you're blessed enough to live in a country which stocks the stuff, take advantage and try out all their other great flavours! I will be seething in jealousy all the way over here.

Giveaway Goodies & Must Go's: Palmer's and Eubos Promotion at 1 Utama!

Came back from 1 Utama just before closing time and right after dinner I was doing some window shopping, and shopping shopping, since it's the Mega Sale now. Spotted an Eubos and Palmer's Roadshow stall by Caring Pharmacy right in from of the Kiehl's outlet. Obviously, I decided to close in on it since 1) I love Eubos!! And 2) I saw a see-through box with bottles inside (usually means some sort of recycling activity - which I love and hope more brands would encourage!)

So off I went and as I approached the stall, a promoter came to me and handed me an Eubos sample. Yay for samples! It came with a form which he then told me was for the recycling program. See they have this recycling program which ends like....today (June 26) where you drop ANY empty bottle/tube of skin care/body care product into the afore mentioned see-through box and you get a RM 5 voucher to be used on the spot! AND they were having some great promotions! And there are tester bottles for all the products so you can test before you buy! LOVE!! The products are already reflecting promotional prices and you get even more GWP along with it! Buy RM 60, RM 120, RM 300 and get some great goodies!

I stocked up on some Eubos products, which I love and will review of course!

So don't wait for anything, get to 1 Utama fellow PJ/KLites and grab some great bargains! Don't say I didn't tell you so!

Random Thoughts: June RAK Sign-up!

Isn't it crazy? It's already June! Half of 2011 is almost over. But what's here to stay for the month is the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) hosted by the great duo over at Book Soulmates! Random Thoughts: My May RAK

So, May was the first time I discovered RAK aka Random Acts of Kindness. My post for May is here.

The Bookworm: Further Under The Duvet - Marian Keyes

This is my second Marian Keyes novel, the first having been Angels. But, this is my first Marian Keyes collection of journalism (any Keyes afficionado will know what this means). I never did get to read the first installment aptly entitled Under The Duvet. Notice this one has a Further before the Under? This is Part 2 people! And it is quite a standalone so no worries that you'll be lost. I wasn't! I see

I must say, I find it very refreshing to read short stories. It's a quiet reprieve after all those single-story novels, if you know what I mean. During those busy busy seasons, I feel like it's quite an accomplishment when I finish 1 story. And that is exactly why short stories are perfect! I can say, "I finished so many stories in one week!" Cheating I know, but who cares! It's MY accomplishment.

A rather funny thing happened while I was reading this book. I came across a section called Short Stories. And I thought this whole book was made up of short stories! Imagine my surprise! And that isn't even the shocker! I soon found out that these so-called Short Stories, were actually pretty long stories! And I wanted more short-er stories! It seems people are never satisfied, with people in this context meaning me of course!

One bad thing about this book, there is NO summary! Due to it being a collection of short stories (there! I said it! now you know what a collection of journalism means!!) BUT do not fear, for I will provide you with my very own summation of this story of short stories.

She starts of with a chapter called Handbags and Gladrags, talking about her experiences with what else, shopping! And a stint as a makeup writer for a magazine (VERY funny this one). Then we go On The Road, Keyes style. It's travels all the way baby! Let me tell you, she travels A LOT and this makes for lots of enjoyable reads. Health and Beauty is next, a treasure trove of tips for an ex-magazine writer. Woman to Woman is about the all-important woman power, getting married, and the F-word (gasp!) . Friends and Family introduces the Keyes family, the whole hilarious lot of them really, from cute nieces and nephews to gorgeous sisters-in-law. But Seriously. No no that is really a chapter title! This one is really touching, discussing how some of her travels have impacted on her life. And how she came to be an author. I didn't think people could come from that! And last but surely not least, Short Stories tackles well, just that. There are 8 of them and they ain't that short!

If it isn't already clear, this collection of journalism covers Keyes' many loves. Shopping (lots), traveling (quite a lot as well), family, the spa, make-up tips and tricks and loads more. Psst...she claims she stayed in a room once occupied by Tom Cruise! That's it for my mini-summary.

As for her writing style, I dig it! I like how freestyle it is and the stories flow smoothly from page to page. Although, she does use the F-word. And a variation of it, several times. But it is used so good-naturedly that it doesn't feel as obscene as it should be. Or maybe she desensitized me?

And so, you have got to trust me when I say, I really like this book! Me thinks it is time I read more short stories. If only to make myself feel better, about myself.

My Review
This is my very first venture into Julia Quinn after hunting for a romance novel to quench my thirst. I'd just exhausted my last novel by my fave author and was looking for something new to read. And then I stumbled upon this novel with its cute and catchy title (it worked by the way, I bought it!) I must say I am not disappointed with this book. The reason why I picked this book rather than one of her more famous books is because this one is a standalone whereas most of the others belong to a list of sequels.

I must say I disagree with Amazon.com's sensuality rating. This one is definitely tamer than my normal novels but it is a tender story about two unsuspecting lovers. Unsuspecting being the key word here but I'm not spilling! To me, a great romance book is one that offers twists and turns at every angle. A good book however where you get the feeling like you know how it ends but it's the getting there that counts. How To Marry A Marquis for me, is a good book. I knew the answer to the mystery as soon as it had started. Such a shame, although it is pretty straightforward when you get to reading it.

What I like about this book is its characters. The heroine, Elizabeth Hotchkiss is akin to a historical Bella Swan ala Twilight. A real klutz, a simpleton, an underestimated individual. And yet somehow manages to get the hot hero. James Sidwell is someone who in normal situations wouldn't get caught up by the simple life. But there is that something special about Elizabeth that sucks him in and won't let go. The side characters add sizzle to this story. Lady Danbury, James' aunt is the real sparkler for me. If anyone made a movie of this book, she'd win the Oscar. Another lovely inclusion to the list is the man of the house, Lady Danbury's cat, who ignores Elizabeth to no avail yet is her best friend in the most important of times. I wouldn't mind a cat like that. The latter bit anyway.

Overall, this is a good read and a good choice for beginners to romance and historicals. There isn't a lot of mention of the normal customs associated with period pieces so this is as good a starter as can be.

Random Thoughts: Do You Bit For Charity With Just A Click of A Button!

They helps the poor to help themselves, working with them to build sustainable futures for their children, families and communities through emergency relief, education, health care, economic development and promotion of justice.'

I recently volunteered at World Vision Malaysia, but I'll save those details for another day and post. It is part of a bigger plan of mine.

But where ever you live, you can contribute to this good cause by spending a few seconds of your time. But do hurry as it is only for a limited time.

BROS Malaysia is donating RM 0.50 to World Vision's current Gift of Hope fundraising campaign which aims to help in the purchasing of water and sanitation systems for poor communities in Vietnam. All you have to do is 'LIKE' BROS' Facebook page and that's it! It may not seem like a lot of money but imagine if we doubled BROS' current 5,195 followers (at time of writing), that's almost RM 2598! Now that's a lot of dough!

Please feel free to spread the word about this worthy cause because it doesn't even take a minute of your time. There aren't that many things you can do in a single minute, let alone donate to a charity!

Foodie Hunt: Tutti Frutti's A Real Treat!

How could anyone deny themselves a little treat once in awhile. That’s exactly what my bestie and I DIDN’T do when we sauntered over to a Tutti Frutti outlet for some yummy frozen yoghurt. Mind you, frozen yoghurt is said to be healthier and more nutritious compared to cream-based icey treats.

We came here for dessert before heading off for a much deserved massage. So, here’s what we tried!

Strawberry Banana AND Passionfruit

This one is lovely. The strawberry banana has a great flavour. Not too sweet at all! You get a hint of eat fruit without either being too overpowering. As for the passionfruit, we were wary of it being too sour which is what you usually get fruit the actual fruit itself. But no, this wasn’t so at all! It was very pleasant. A tad tangy, but another keeper in my books! Unfortunately both flavours are pretty similar in colour so you can’t see much of a difference from the picture. I believe the one at the bottom is the passionfruit.

Strawberry Banana AND Chocolate

I’ll only comment on the chocolate. This one was, chocolatey in a word. It’s a very common chocolate flavour so I’d skip it in favour of the other better fruity flavours.

Strawberry Banana AND Kiwi

Ah the kiwi, another fruit I thought was going to be sour. I am afraid, read AFRAID of green kiwis in general. Although the golden ones are really sweet and are slowly dispelling my fears of the fruit. This one, just like the passionfruit, is just nice. It’s sweeter than the normal fruit, thank goodness! But at the same time a little tangy due to the yoghurt.

All in all I prefer the fruity flavours. I have yet to try all the flavours as different outlets have different flavours, and usually less than 10 offerings. The brand is expanding their outlet reach as I type this so who knows what new flavour I’ll get to try next!

Tutti Frutti offers flavoured frozen yoghurts and several topping choices. Just pile on whatever you want and get it weighed. Finally a delicious treat that’s healthy and low in fat and sugar!

Tutti Frutti costs RM 5.30 per 100g. Outlets are found in most major malls. Or will be soon!

Random Thoughts: My 2011 New Year’s Resolutions

Well, it’s New Year’s Eve today so I thought I’d just recap what I have accomplished, in terms of my 2010 resolutions and put down my 2011 ones. Hopefully next year will be better. It is the Year of the Rabbit, for those of you who follow the Chinese Zodiac, which is my year! So fingers crossed!

First, I thought of going through my 2010 resolutions to see how they can be improved next year.

1) To be more loyal to my blog and post more frequently and regularly

I did do this, to an extent. I posted more this year compared to 2009 when I started the blog but am still unhappy with the mountain of reviews I have stored in my brain, waiting to come out and be posted. 2011 will definitely be bigger and better!

2) To meet and make many new blog buddies

Accomplished! All thanks to joining blog hops and my 2 big giveaways this year. I will try to do more for next year. And also to definitely make more and more buddies!

3) To take better care of myself physically and mentally

This one was a toughie. Physically, I think I got worse (see below resolution for more detail), mentally I definitely grew. Due to my unfinished college education, I’ve got 6 months more to go! And also I did get to read more books this year. Hope to increase that number for sure!

4) To lose 5kg

Ah, the darn weight loss issue. I think I successfully put on MORE weight when I was supposed to lose it. I so need to look for a good gym around here. One that doesn’t force you into submission and make me never want to step foot in that place ever again! Not that simple here in Malaysia I assure you.

5) To attend more events and workshops (hopefully)

Another one shot down, which is so sad as I love learning more from these events. 2010 has been a bullish year. Am going to carry this forward to 2011.

6) To do all the things I couldn't in 2009

Wondering why I listed this in the first place. It’s just so vague, isn’t it? Well I DID get better at typing, for that I am happy. Won’t be relisting this resolution for sure!

7) To take up photography seriously and be a more creative person

My photography skills have definitely improved since the beginning of 2010, when I got my first DSLR baby. I really should finish reading that manual though. Got to learn those basics!

8) To spend wisely (doesn't mean I will buy less...tee hee)

Ah, I think I did buy less this year. Except for those presents for others, I think I may have overdone it a little. Oh well, they can still be used for upcoming events so that isn’t so bad.

9) To travel and experience new things

This, I really didn’t get to do. To travel more I mean. I love traveling and hope to do more in 2010. I did try some new foods! And found one I really dislike!

10) To live life to the fullest

Again another vague one. I so did not accomplish this. Oh well, 2011 is a brand new year after all!

Now for my 2011 resolutions!! In completely random order

1) To AGAIN be more loyal to my blog and post more frequently and regularly, and to get it redesigned and nice and tidy (which I am currently in the midst of)

2) To finish up the rest of my college degree, to the best of my abilities

3) To lose 5kg

Brought this forward, even though I now have to lose more weight, but let’s start with a more achievable number.

4) To take up photography seriously

There’s just so much of it I want to explore, like Macro Photography! Now if only I could travel more.

5) To make new blog buddies

6) To save more money for my future travels and spending wisely on books!

I just love books! Already I have too many that have not been read. Must get on those!

7) To attend more events and workshops

8) To travel more and read more

9) To get a part-time job AND learn to drive!

10) To be a better person (calmer and more patient)

11) To clear the clutter that’s in my house

Just A Tip: What To Do With Moisturizers You No Longer Want

I'm sure you've all been in that situation where we buy buy buy and store, hide, pack away. We're girls and who doesn't love shopping for that special item that may restore our youth? In the end we end up with numerous moisturizers, even more once we actually start digging deep into those drawers and closets.

So sometimes we fall out of love with the moisturizer after the whole long-lost find. Or maybe it's been sitting hidden so long you're afraid it may react badly on your facial skin. Perhaps you feel bad about the price you had to pay for it but now am not willing to give it away, yet don't want to use it on your face.

The simple solution: Use it on your neck, or even on your legs and feet! They definitely won't complain and the risks are lower that you'll break out.

Just a tip, so you don't throw out a fairly good product and waste it.

Face It: Clarins samples from Jusco!

Today I was at Mid Valley getting my brand new haircut. Also, since I was there, I went and picked up some Clarins samples including the new Shaping Facial Lift, the old formula was already a bestseller so this one sounds promising too. Got my samples from a voucher within the Jusco magazine.

The nice SA Affa gave me a consultation followed by 1 Shaping Facial Lift, HydraQuench Cream, and a Gentle Cleanser with Cottonseed.

They are also having this great promotion whereby the set comes with 2 Shaping Facial Lift (not full size though) plus 1 full-size Defining Eye Lift! The latter alone costs RM 152 according to Affa. Movie Buff: Despicable Me

To be (despicable) or not to be, THAT is the question!!

Yellow minions. How cute are they!?

Despicable Me marks my first full-length 3-D movie of all time. Heck, it IS my first! But fancy movie effects aside, how did the despicable baddie measure up to bigger summer blockbusters? Read on to find out...

Steve Carell (of Get Smart fame) voices Gru, who wants to the most villainous villain of all time. When one of the wonders of the world goes missing, and replaced by a pumped-up balloon version of it to boot, all eyes are on Gru. But did he actually commit that crime? Unfortunately NOT! In his mind anyway. And thus he, along with his awesomely cute and funny minions (see yellow squigglies) devise a plan to commit the crime of the century. If you have seen the trailers, or at least seen the posters, you'll know (or guess) that he is out to steal the moon. Yes, The Moon! That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind...THAT MOON!

Armed with a 10 year-old sketched out plan he sets out to get capital to steal said object. And where should he look for it but at the Bank of Evil (I guess criminals aren't allowed to bank at the same well....bank). Funny thing is that this Bank of Evil is located in an *drumroll please* actual bank!

Gru faces competition in the form of the actual Pyramid criminal named Vector (voiced by Jason Segel). Now here's a real bada$$! This guy has sharks, heat-seeking missiles on top of his house, lasers, hammers, rocket launchers, the works! And now they fight for the ultimate prize.

Julie Andrews voices Gru's fussy, hard-to-please mother who never rewarded his efforts. You might say she was the cause of Gru's turning into a criminal. And to think, Julie Andrews has played everything from a nun to a queen (on several occasions) and here she is, a hard-hitting criminal mom.

Russell Brand (the future Mr. Katy Perry) holds his own as the criminal version of James Bond's Q. His unmistakable British accent is very apparent but suitably older. He lends his voice to Dr. Nefario, Gru's biggest support. Every supervillain needs a weapons creator after all. He plays a bigger part towards the end of the movie.

Gru, facing major problems from his biggest rival adopts (takes advantage) of three orphaned girls Margo, Edith, and Agnes (who strangely bears a similar resemblance to Boo from Monsters Inc.). The funniest part is that there is one scene in which will remind Pixar fans of a certain animated movie trilogy, and this movie comes from Illumination Entertainment! I could have sworn that it was a Pixar movie based on those two points. I suppose it was merely my imagination.

Overall a very fun-filled movie. My bunch of movie-goers laughed our hearts out practically the entire film, which says a lot! The only part I wasn't convinced off, coincidentally the main point of the movie, is that the villain was not despicable enough! Imagine that, a villain that isn't bad enough. The yellow minions will have you in stitches even though you won't understand a word that comes out of their mouths.

Apparently, Malaysia is being blessed with a cinema opening even before America's. Despicable Me hits Malaysian cinemas on Thursday, 8th July 2010 and spans approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

So if you're feeling stressed, or want to escape the footie fever all around, sit yourself down and immerse yourself in the world of the Superbad!

Movie Buff: The Prince of Persia Is Finally Here!

From one of my favourite, if not the favourite producers, Jerry Bruckheimer, comes Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Having brought to the world the likes of Bad Boys, National Treasure, CSI, and Pirates of the Carribean, and many more, I expected A LOT from this one. Don’t you just hate it when the trailer contains all the best parts squeezed into that minute or two? Heck, I know I do! If you thought the trailer was good, you’re in for a surprise. Compared to the actual movie, it stinks! But one never knows how these video game cum movies will do. But this one far exceeded my expectations!

The movie starts with the introduction of a young Dastan and Bis, orphaned best friends trying to get by in life. As fate would have it, King Sharaman of Persia was in town for a little trip and witnessed Dastan’s bravery and smarts and proceeded to adopt him.

Flashforward 15 years, and Prince Dastan is now a dashingly handsome young man (Jake Gyllenhaal anyone!!) A total opposite from his two older royal-blooded brothers, his approach to life is a brasher, unbiased one. This can be seen in how he storms the gates of Alamut. This you must watch! As usual with Jerry Bruckheimer movies, stunts are original and very well-choreographed. Architecture is also emphasized with spectacularly designed sets and backdrops.

Inside the palace we see Princess Tamina, brought to life in the form of Gemma Arterton. When I first found out she would be in this film, my thoughts were “Uh oh…” especially after the “acting” she delivered in Clash of the Titans. But alas, there is nothing to fear. I thought she did well this time. Granted, she has a major role this time and has moved up from a Bond Girl cum Sorceress to a Princess of a sacred city. She is also the protector of the dagger at the centre of the whole movie/game.

When Dastan is believed to have murdered his father, the King, he is forced to flee, taking Tamina with him. Now he has to figure out who framed him, clear his name, restore peace to his family and country, and get married. What ensues is an incredible adventure filled with cool parkour stunts, and great special-effects! I am wondering why THIS movie wasn’t made into a 3D one. From what I saw, this would have been the only movie besides Avatar that I’d have bothered watching in 3D.

Alfred Molina lends his acting chops as a hilarious Sheik Amar who has an affinity with ostriches. Of all animals, they picked ostriches! Ben Kingsley plays Nizam, uncle to the three princes. There are some very funny characters in this one, and some real bad-asses with vile creatures used to take down the poor good guys. Unlike the Gladiator and Robin Hood movies, the fighting scenes, even though fast-paced, don’t zip by so fast you don’t know what is going on.

Okay, I will admit that part of why I was so looking forward to this movie was to watch Jake Gyllenhaal all buffed up and looking sultry, let’s just say, he didn’t disappoint! Part-way through the movie I even noticed that I wasn’t even looking at his chest. I was too enraptured by his lovely blue oases. Hear me when I say there were some protests when the kissing scene came about. I was silently one of them.

As I was writing this post, the trailer played at least 4 times! No surprise as this is the run-up to the movie’s official opening date. All in all, a MUST-WATCH to me. Even my movie date, who is easily bored and loves to fill those moments by eating popcorn was glued to the screen, quite a feat I tell you!

I will go out and say that this might just be the Summer Blockbuster of 2010!

Must Go's: Kelly Clarkson Live ROCKS!!!

Finally, one of my idols (pun not intended) gets to come to Malaysia!

No cookies for guessing where I’ve just gotten home from! I got to the stadium an hour early to beat the traffic. Walked around and picked up the normal pre-concert freebies ie. balloons and posters. I was skeptical regarding the weather, it rained this afternoon, but thank goodness it didn’t come down. Firstly, I apologize for the lack of photos. We weren’t allowed to bring them in. Not like there was ever ANY way that I could have smuggled my ginormous DSLR in there anyway.

Inside the stadium, I was seated at Block 2, pretty much right in front of the speakers. And boy where they big and aplenty. This was half an hour before the stated 8pm showtime. The crowd was thin and I had a lot of space to myself. We were seated at the corner, yay!

10-20 minutes before 8pm, a Hitz Fm member named Natalie (I think) came on stage and prompted the crowd to cheer. By this time the stadium was practically full. Posters were flung, screams were shouted. Big whoop in my mind. We were then told who the pre-Kelly fill-ins were going to be. Suki ( Sookie??) and Jaclyn Victor to be exact. Found it funny when Natalie shouted that Suki would be coming out. Know why? Everyone around me turned to each other and asked their partners, “Who’s Suki!?!” I was one of them. Haha…

At about 8pm, a van/sedan drove in through the tunnel, shouts filled the stadium. But no, it wasn’t Kelly. It was Jaccyn and Suki. Jaclyn started the show with a medley (a LONG one) – her quote NOT mine. I found it more of a mini Jaclyn concert in itself. Pretty good start to the show! Then Suki came out in what I could have sworn was a wedding dress. A red one at that! With a big poufy red train! She started with a violin rendition, a BAD one. And that was besides the technical volume difficulties! She then sang a Malay song to which most of the crowd didn’t know. Sigh…

At 8:30pm the van/sedan left and another flashier one came in its place. THAT was Kelly’s van!! Woot! Just before 8:35pm, the lights went down, the band took their places, they started drumming and picking their strings and then KELLY CAME OUT!!! And BLASTED!!!!

She rocked, rolled, and jumped about for 90 minutes straight with second-intervals (few seconds). The lights were used to the max, the bass and guitars rocked HARD, and Kelly jumped all over the stage, singing with all she had.

What I witnessed was a no-nonsense concert, no video montages, very little props, no rehearsed dance numbers. Just a powerhouse MASTERCLASS!! Pitch perfect, her range was wonderful. Simon (Cowell) would be so proud.

She sang her greatest hits as well as covering a couple of her favourite songs from other bands/singers like Kings of Leon, Alanis Morrisette, and Kylie Minogue to name a few. I thought she did them so well too!

I’ll share a little secret with you. I found some songs so powerful they brought a few tears to my eyes. See, I admitted it! Those songs had a personal connection for me. But she made them so much more meaningful.

Some songs rocked so hard and loud that the crowd was at their feet, jumping, flinging their balloons everywhere, shouting, screaming…just having a good time.

What I expected was a bit of a diva-ish concert, with Kelly being an American Idol, but what I got was a very down-to-earth, pure talent performance from start to finish. And when I say down-to-earth, I mean it. Between songs Kelly giggled like a schoolgirl, encouraging the crowd on, all while being barefoot. Yes, you read correctly, she was BAREFOOT the whole 1 and a half hours she performed. Moreover, she sported a black top with sequins, black tights, a black skirt over said tights, blue eye makeup, some eyeliner, and tied up hair after the third songs. She didn’t even have a costume change, not that I minded in the least! That just takes up time.

All in all, a MUST-WATCH if she ever comes back again. One of the most deserving, if only, American Idols. Leaving the stadium with a sigh, a happy heart, a pair of ringing ears, and blurry eyes. All I ever want now IS MORE!!!

Movie Buff: Clash of the Titans? More like The Titanic...Sinking

It is with a heavy heart that I must say that this movie disappointed me on quite a few levels. I had such hopes for this one. Especially with Sam Worthington no longer decked out in his career-boosting shade of blue, but as a real man or should I say Demi-God?

So, what is good about this movie? Besides the delish Sam Worthington? For me it was the mythological aspect of the film. Being quite the fan I am, I expected some cool mythological characters. There were a few of course, with Zeus, Hades, Pegasus, Medusa playing pretty big roles. What I didn’t expect was the Kraken, of which most of us have come to know as being from Pirates of the Caribbean. That, unfortunately, was practically all I liked about this movie.

But what was bad about it? For one thing, the space gaps! And boy were they big. Jumping through the ages as we follow Perseus’ (Sam Worthington) character growing up, jumping from one scene to a totally different one, I almost couldn’t keep up.

The fight scenes were really shaky to the point you couldn’t tell who was where and what they were doing. I even found some of the characters’ outfits weren’t done so well, to the point where you couldn’t really see the character clearly. Worse if you aren’t sitting in the top half of the screening hall!

And how in the world can they NOT have Sam Worthington with his pecs! That is such a loss. Or perhaps I am getting too excited over the upcoming Prince of Persia with the hunky Jake Gyllenhaal in full pec mode.

AND, THE ENDING! Meh at the most. Anti-climax I say. Although I won’t say how it happened but you all know how it really ends anyway. Nothing to shout about, more like to scream about in upset.

I really think this movie was made purely for the 3D effect, something I am starting to tire from due to the mass bombardment of 3D movies recently. In truth, I only saw the 2D version but it sure isn’t good enough to make me want to sit through it again.

If you’d rather save the tenner you’d have to spend on this movie, all you have to do is watch the Disney version of Hercules The Movie and you pretty much know what happens in this one.

This movie ain’t fooling no-one!

Just A Tip: Alternative Cleanser Uses

Ever been faced with the problem where a cleanser failed you? A cleanser that has expired but is still sitting in a dusty corner of you room or drawer? Or maybe even a sample tube that isn't suitable for your skin type yet is too little to pass it along to a family member or friend?

I sure have been in that position before. I still have quite a few of such cleansers laying around. But I am one who hates waste of any sort.
So the best thing to do is to use it!

Just not on your face!

Use it as a cleaner for your reusable glass jars or bottles! The ones you use for your facial products. That is what I do. That way you clean your jars or bottles properly while utilizing a product that might otherwise have gone to waste being dumped into the bin.

A win-win situation in my mind.

Guess what!? My unlucky streak with magazine contests has finally ended. I spotted my name in print in this month's CLEO magazine. Very cool! Apparently I won the Gwen Stefani prize from the January issue.

Very excited now! Am patiently awaiting my letter, albeit a little impatiently. I have never, ever won something from a magazine yet have had countless friends and relatives win big prizes. I guess it is my time! Hoping it is any day now. I'd love to get my hands on it for a review!

Movie Buff: Alice In Wonderland

Today I got the chance to watch one of the most anticipated movies of the month, Alice in Underland. Oops, Wonderland! Haha… see how different people have different takes on things.

I saw the 2D version, probably not as fun as the 3D ought to be but you skip the supposed massive headache that follows so that was a good thing.

This version by Tim Burton is different from the original Disney picture. Think of this as the live action sequel to its predecessors animated movie glory. The movie started of well, with lots of 3D bits, which of course I didn’t get the full effect of.

Alice is now grown up, a 19 year old embarking on the next phase of her life, marriage. Or so it should have been. But you know that isn’t how the story goes. From the trailer we see her plunging into that little rabbit hole like the first time and encountering the same few characters who become friends. But this time there are quite a few extra characters if I remember correctly. Some scarier creatures haunt the screen but no worries, as good usually prevails at the end.

The ending is as expected. Let’s face it, most of the time you know how a movie will end just by reading a summary or watching a trailer. But it is the inserts that count and make a movie stand out. And this time, I didn’t know what to expect with all the new characters.

Commendable performances courtesy of Captain Jack ( Johnny Depp aka The Mad Hatter) yet again. Check out that makeup! And how gaunt his face looks. Sadly Anne Hathaway’s (The White Queen) part was rather small, she is one of my favourite actresses. I personally thought the pale white skin didn’t match that shade of lipstick, but that is just me. It looked the shade of a bruised plum!

Helena Bonham Carter brought a very believable and horrible Red Queen. I dare you all to recognize Absolem’s voice actor. How fun! And wise he sounded. The Cheshire Cat was a little out of character based on the original, but everyone has a little good in them.

There are quite a few funny moments. Even during the very beginning so try not to get stuck at the concessions counter like I was. Goodness, who knew they only opened at 10:30 a.m. on a weekend nonetheless! And the movie was scheduled to start at exactly that time too. I watched this at GSC’s Mid Valley branch where a lot of people were spotted queuing for free tickets.

As for the movie, the humour was there, the characters loveable and colourful. Yet, I felt that the movie lacked the life-like effect during the nature scenes. I think it would have been more fun, especially for 3D goers, should there have been more going on. But all in all, a good, fun way to spend close to 2 hours.

P.S. Look out for the Mad Hatter's very cute antic at the end of the movie. You won’t want to miss it!

Suitcases: Macro Polo Gateway, Hong Kong

I recently took a short trip to Hong Kong for some shopping and foodie eating. Of course, the weather there was a big clincher! It was winter season which allowed me to whip out my winter clothing. What a wonderful difference from the ever hot little country we reside in. That was the good part.

The bad part? I fell sick! The night before I was to leave for my morning flight! The flu it seems. How unfortunate as I was so looking forward to this trip, it being my first time back in Hong Kong in 7 years!

I have a few posts lined up regarding said trip. This is the first, about the lovely hotel I stayed at. This place is called the Marco Polo Gateway Hotel at Tsim Sha Tsui. One of the great things about this particular hotel is its location! Located along Canton Road, it is one of the main roads in Hong Kong. Think Orchard Road in Singapore. And, it is connected to a major shopping site which has several sections and names, but mostly called The Gateway. Now think Cititel Hotel/Mid Valley Megamall/Boulevard Hotel/The Gardens/The Gardens Hotel in Kuala Lumpur! Same concept, just bigger!

Here’s a look at the hotel. You can watch a 360 degree video on the official website! Very cool stuff!

What’s that? Why show Prada instead of the hotel? Well, the main entrance is actually right across from Prada! Really unhealthy for those without their belts fastened tight! Imagine, I see this very sight every time I go in and out of the hotel! It sure makes my tongue wag and my fingers itchy.

A shot of the room. That’s pretty much it! Besides the bathroom which I never take pictures off. Oh, please excuse the bags! I think this is a really adequate room for 2 people, especially in a busy and happening country like Hong Kong where you are mostly going to find yourself anywhere but the hotel room, besides resting time.

First thing I did after checking in and unloading the bags? Eat of course! I went to my favourite restaurant! That one deserves a post on its own for sure! It’s going to be a really yummy one! Promise!

Just a little note, I’ve stayed in this very hotel 4 times in the last 10 years. And it is getting better and better! Mostly due to the great location. The hotel hasn’t changed, it is the surrounding stores outside that have changed so much that I got lost so many times looking for my favourite spots. I did go home with a better sense of the new Hong Kong!

Loves: Convenient location, lots of shopping, good hotel service, adequate sized rooms
Gripes: NONE so far!

All in all, a really nice hotel. If you want a more upper class version, there are 2 more hotels under the same parent company which are also located around the shopping complex. They are the Marco Polo Prince and Marco Polo Hong Kong.

But if I were you, I'd prefer to spend that extra dough on some major shopping and eating! Heck, you only spend a few hours in the hotel room once you get to Hong Kong. So don't waste it!

Must Go's: Kiehl's Party Update - I Got An Invite!!

That was the day of the longest annular solar eclipse of the millennium and will remain the longest until the 23rd of December, 3043! And where was I? At Miu’s Superhero (Berry) Birthday Party of course! The party’s actual name has been misused so many times even I have forgotten what it was originally called. Anyway, I got an invite! Woo hoo…

So it was the Superhero party of the century hosted by Kiehl’s! Everyone (ok, almost everyone) came dressed up as their favourite Superhero. Those sighted were SuperMiu, SuperMom, Catwoman, Elizabeth Swann, and Fly Devil (don’t worry, I’ve never heard of Fly Devil either!) But what did I dress up as? Well, ME of course! Haha…I supported in a red ensemble (let’s just put it that way shall we).

There were Q and A games, a mini “treasure hunt” encompassing the store window, a Best Dressed award giveaway, a 2 minute intro to their new Acai Berry range plus a self demo, face-painting, eating, drinking, and mingling!

Face It: Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, How Does It Stack Up?

Yesterday I talked about the Ultra Facial Moisturizer, today, it is one of Kiehl’s bestsellers, the Ultra Facial Cream’s turn! This one has quite a reputation. It was tested in Greenland by a special team of hiker who reported great results upon usage of this product. And knowing Greenland, this product still managed to perform under harsh conditions. If it worked for the hikers, think what this product can do for us living in hot little Malaysia.

Texture-wise, I find this one more lightweight than the Moisturizer. It ha the same fluffy white colouring found in the whole Ultra Facial range. Scentless yet again which is a thumbs up! I was given some advice by a KCR to use this very sparingly. Just a smidgen will do the trick. As you don’t need to use a lot of the product at one go, this tub is actually going to last you a very long time! Great for value-conscious consumers like myself.

Again, my dry cheeks soaked this baby right up! And surprise surprise, my T-zone quite likes this one too! I feel this Cream is much more suitable for me. I wake up to a very light sheen on my T-zone which is very good news to me. I believe this one is probably the closest I am getting to HG for now. Ain’t that grand!

Loves: no scent, very light texture, moisturizing for all skin types
Gripes: NONE!!

Face It: Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer, Ultra Good?

I am terribly late with the supposedly-daily Kiehl’s product review. I was in a jolly good mood, having just watched a detective with a keen eye and his dashingly handsome sidekick.

Today’s review will be about Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer. This product is one of three moisturizers in the Ultra Facial range targeted at all skin types. It is said to be easily absorbed and thus leaves skin soft and moisturized.

The lovely egg white colouring of the moisturizer is quite common place yet I expect better results from this one compared to other brands. The product doesn’t have a very distinct scent which is good for a facial product most people depend on to keep skin plump and glowing. The inclusion of several moisturizing oil piqued my interest even more! Plus, I found the texture quite light which is good enough for me. At my age of 20 plus, I don’t really need a very rich moisturizer just yet.

My dry cheeks found this product really moisturizing which made me happy. The skin on my neck and décolletage felt just the same which is great as I have had reactions from other brands before on my neck. Unfortunately, I found the Ultra Facial Moisturizer a tad oily on my combination skin T-zone. It would have been the perfect moisturizer for my moisturizer-obsessed self but for this fact. And now I will have to look again for that ever evasive HG moisturizer.

Loves: no scent, light texture, moisturizing for dry skins

The Ultra Facial Moisturizer comes in 2 forms, one with SPF and one without. I tried the one without SPF. The Ultra Facial Moisturizer retails at RM 70 for 75ml and RM 100 for 125ml while the Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 retails at RM 75 for 75ml and RM 115 for 125ml at all Kiehl’s outlets nationwide.

Face It: Is Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1, Rave or Rant?

Now, in honour of the Kiehl’s Berry Birthday Party coming up, I have decided to review (or try to) 1 Kiehl’s product everyday.

First up is their Lip Balm #1! I have an equal amount of read raves and rants about this product. But as everyone knows, they don’t matter unless the product actually works on you! If they call it Lip Balm #1 there MUST be something good about it right? So, did it work for me? Let’s find out!

Here’s my story. A few months ago, on a Singaporean trip, the weather was bad. Really bad. It was scorching and blazing every single day. To cut it short, my lips ended up chapped, cracked, bruised, and painful! It was torture as I am quite sensitive to the heat of the sun. the worst part was that I smeared goops of my then favourite lip product, Vaseline, all over my lips. Just so you know it was an SPF 15 product and yet I got burnt! This sensation continued even after I returned home from my trip and with copious amount of yet again, Vaseline. But it wouldn’t budge!

Then a lightbulb went on in my head. What better time to try out the much touted Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1!? So off I went to the store and smeared some on while browsing through their many products. Just a few hours later I realized, the painful, cracked lips of mine had vanished! As if into thin air believe it or not. I ended up buying some of course. Nowadays I use Vaseline for my normal condition (I sill have to finish it up right) and Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 when my lips aren’t doing so well. How I wish I was introduced to it sooner! Think of the pain I could have avoided. I think the SPF 4 would have helped lots.

It has a nice texture too. Quite firm coming out of the tube, unlike the goopy Vaseline you get on hot days. This one has no scent so for those who dislike scented products, this is for you! The lip balm also comes in several seasonal flavours during the Christmas season but so far have not been very impressed by them. I found them too light in scent. It is also non-greasy which makes me like it so much more! I already bought a back-up! This baby is going in my carry-all every time I go on a trip. I am not going to risk getting sick lips again!

Loves: very moisturizing, no scent, firm texture, non-greasy, comes with SPF 4
Gripes: NONE!!

So far, I must say that this is my LE lip balm. Not even Chapstick has worked this good!

Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 comes in tube-form of 15ml as well as a small tub, of which I am not sure of the size. This baby retails at RM 29 at all Kiehl’s outlets throughout Malaysia.
